What is this?

The Revspace Chemical Extravaganza is a great way to learn about chemistry, safety, and have fun doing it.

Why should I come

  • Take part in fun experiments
  • See what NOT to do
  • Learn something
  • See how to safely use chemicals at the space

The Plan

  • Introduction lecture (With Slides)

-

  • Safety talk
  • Your eyes (egg), your eyes on acid (HCl)
  • Your body (assorted meat products), your body on chemicals (acids and NaOH)

-

  • Oxidation of glycerine by KMnO4
  • Esterification of methanol and salicylic acid
  • Flame tests and assorted coloured flames
  • Chlorate gummy bears
  • Making Rayon :)

-

  • The mandatory smoke and bangs

-

  • Discussion about chemical procurement for projects
  • Q&A

-Ideas-

  • Chlorines oxidizing properties (displacing lower halogens from solutions)

Equipment

  • Projector (Can we put it in the sparkshack)

Chemicals

  • PeterC will be in charge of procurement

Costs

There is a current recommended donation of 6 euro (yes, chemicals are expensive)
