Two weeks ago, thieves threw a brick through an easily accessible window and entered the space unauthorized. Thanks to the recently initiated project SpaceLoop and some alert late-night irc dwellers we were rapidly alerted and on the scene. Upon entering the space, voices were heard upstairs and a hasty retreat to call the police was executed (no need to confront potentially armed suspects). The police went in with a whole armada and a dog, but the perpetrators had already fled the locus delicti.

The quick response by our members interrupted their stealing spree however, and in the end they have only taken the projector and some money from the bar. Among other items that were collected and ready to take were some microphones, an eee pc, a cheap telescope and a drill. The police took some of the remaining items. Later, they returned for a display of CSI. As of yet, there is no news about the investigation.

  • Founder steps down*

About a week later, the former president of the board and founder of the space, gmc, decided to resign for personal reasons. This was already announced for September, but due to circumstances his exit from administrative duties has been hastened. A replacement has not yet been assigned by the remaining board members, but there is currently a vacancy for an additional board member. Once the board is supplemented again with a new member, the role of president will be assigned among the than sitting board.. The remaining board members have reshuffled their functions to compensate for this and will keep running the foundation in this setup for at least the rest of the year.

<img src="/pub/RevelationSpace/NewsItem11x06x30x0/lightning_web.jpg" alt="lightning_web.jpg" width='240' style="float: left; padding-right: 0.5em; padding-bottom: 0.5em;" />As a final bonus, two days ago during a heavy thunderstorm lightning struck. A strong electro-magnetic pulse destroyed about half of the running equipment, including the gateway to the internet. As a result, most of the services have been off-line.

A day later, a somewhat large group gathered at the space to repair things. By now, most of the infra-structure is up again. We also took the opportunity to give ourselves lots more extra work by renumbering the internal IP range from the previously reserved but recently assigned 42.0.0.0/8 range to the still private 10.42.0.0/16.

All in all, turbulent weeks, but in the author's opinion perhaps exactly what the space needed. The recent activity has brought people together and released lots of energy. But if it is all the same, we could do without disaster for a while now, thank you.
